Diwali is on Sunday, November 8, 2026. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of the most celebrated holidays in the world. Spanning five days, it symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is the Hindu Festival of Lights and one of the most important celebrations in Indian culture. Observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists worldwide, it typically falls between mid-October and mid-November based on the Hindu lunisolar calendar.
The festival spans five days, with the main celebration on the darkest new moon night of the Hindu month of Kartik. Homes and public spaces are illuminated with oil lamps (diyas), candles, and colorful lights. Families create intricate rangoli (decorative floor patterns) at their doorsteps and set off fireworks to celebrate.
Central to Diwali is the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Families clean and decorate their homes, wear new clothes, exchange gifts and sweets, and gather for elaborate feasts. Traditional sweets like laddu, barfi, and gulab jamun are shared among neighbors and loved ones.
Diwali is celebrated by the global Indian diaspora, making it one of the most widely observed festivals in the world. From London to Singapore to New York, Diwali events bring communities together with music, dance, food, and the warm glow of thousands of lights.
